Meenakshi Hukko, Lumacare Services
Ruth Ennis-Small, Lumacare Services
Session Description
For many seniors, loneliness, reduced mobility, cognitive decline and limited access to traditional group programs can create significant barriers to social connection and emotional wellbeing. This session explores how Virtual Reality (VR) is emerging as a practical, scalable tool that has been successfully integrated into community-based senior care programs to support mental health, reduce social isolation, and create meaningful experiences for older adults.
Through examples including virtual travel, nature immersion, reminiscence activities, and interactive experiences, presenters will demonstrate how VR can promote relaxation, improve mood, and encourage social connection in both group settings and one-on-one sessions with homebound clients. The session will also explore opportunities to strengthen relationships through shared VR experiences involving caregivers and family members.
Designed for senior leaders, program managers, recreation therapists, and frontline providers, this session offers practical guidance on implementing and scaling VR programs, including staff training, workflow integration, client selection, safety considerations, and program evaluation. Participants will leave with practical tools, implementation resources, and real-world lessons to support introducing innovative, non-pharmacological approaches that enhance wellbeing and person-centred care.
